ASCENSION PARISH SCHOOL BOARD
The Constitution of Louisiana places the responsibility for establishing and maintaining an efficient system of public schools on the State Legislature.
The Ascension Parish School Board has been established as a body corporate charged with the establishment, maintenance, development and operation of an efficient public school program within the school district. State and federal courts have held that the Board is vested with a broad range of administrative and supervisory authority commensurate with the aforementioned prescribed educational responsibilities.
Members of the Ascension Parish School Board are officers of the state. The Board is the agency through which the school district acts in regard to school matters. Board members have authority only when functioning as a body or group in a legally called regular or special meeting. The powers of the Board are delegated only to the Board as a body. No authority is granted to members acting as individuals.
The Board is cognizant that all actions must be taken in good faith, with reasonable prudence, sincerity and based on the belief that such actions are correct and in the best interests of the school district in accordance with statutes and pertinent judicial precedents.
The Ascension Parish School Board has the authority to hold as many Board meetings per month as the Board deems necessary. The Board shall conduct at least one regularly scheduled meeting per month. Special meetings may be held as the Board determines or as occasion may require.
At any regular or special meeting of the Board, no business may be transacted which does not come within the purpose or purposes set forth in the agenda for the meeting, except upon unanimous approval of the members of the Board present at that meeting. The motion to add an item not on the agenda shall identify the item with reasonable specificity, including the purpose for the proposed addition to the agenda, and shall be entered into the minutes. In keeping with state law and Board policy, prior to any vote to add an item to the agenda, there shall be an opportunity for public comment on the motion.
The Board holds regularly scheduled public meetings on the 1st, 3rd and 4th Tuesday of every month (except for holidays). Any scheduled committee meeting(s) may precede the regularly scheduled school board meeting. Check the agenda for the correct time & date for all scheduled meeting(s).
- Meetings on the first Tuesday of the month shall be held in Donaldsonville, Louisiana at a site/location designated on the official agenda for that meeting date.
