Clear Bag Guidelines
Backpacks
As part of our continued commitment to school safety and security, and in alignment with the district-wide implementation of weapons detection systems on all campuses, Ascension Public Schools will implement new clear backpack guidelines beginning with the 2026-27 school year.
Under the new guidelines, students at all grade levels will be required to use fully transparent backpacks. Colored, tinted, iridescent, or patterned backpacks, as well as backpacks with logos, patches, decals, or stickers that obstruct visibility of the contents, will not be permitted.
At the middle and high school level, mesh backpacks will also be allowed.
Students may continue to bring a non-transparent small hand-held clutch or privacy bag for personal items. In addition, band instrument cases and non-transparent, sport-specific athletic bags will still be permitted, but they will be subject to daily inspection.
To further support campus safety procedures, students will only be allowed to bring clear water bottles on school campuses.
These measures are designed to strengthen our efforts to prevent prohibited or dangerous items from entering our schools while also improving the efficiency of student entry onto campuses each day. Combined with our new weapons detection systems, the clear backpack guidelines will help create a smoother, faster intake process while maintaining the high level of safety our students, employees, and families deserve.
We understand this change requires preparation for families, and we are announcing the guidelines well in advance to allow ample time for planning before the start of the new school year.
The safety of our students and staff remains our highest priority, and we appreciate your partnership and support as we continue working together to provide safe, secure learning environments across Ascension Public Schools.

Why is the district implementing a clear backpack policy?
The safety of our students and staff is our highest priority. This guideline supports the district-wide implementation of weapons detection systems across all campuses and helps prevent prohibited items from entering our schools. It also allows our teachers and staff to more easily monitor campus safety while helping students move through entry points quickly and efficiently each morning, minimizing delays and ensuring a smooth start to the school day.
When will this policy go into effect?
What type of backpacks are allowed?
Students must use fully transparent backpacks that allow contents to be clearly visible at all times.
- Small manufacturer logos are acceptable.
- Colored straps and piping are allowed.
- Large (oversized) decals, stickers, monogramming, name labels, or designs that obstruct visibility are not permitted. Specifically, these items can be no larger than the size of allowable privacy bags, which are 6.5” x 4.5”.
- Small graphics and patterns that span an area larger than 6.5” x 4.5” are not allowed
Are mesh backpacks allowed?
Are any backpacks not allowed?
Can students bring lunch boxes?
Can students bring cell phones?
What about water bottles?
Only transparent water bottles with no color tint will be allowed
- During pilot testing, non-transparent bottles slowed entry because they required inspection.
- We also found that items could be hidden inside bottles, creating safety concerns.
- Clear bottles help keep lines moving quickly and safely.
- For safety reasons, glass bottles are not allowed, as they could break and injure students.
- Please note that all campuses have bottle-filling stations installed at water fountains.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Are all purses prohibited?
- Do I have to put everything I’m carrying into the permissible bags?
- What about diaper bags?
- If I have special medical equipment I need to have with me at all times, where do I put that?
- Will this policy affect the ability of fans to tailgate?
- Why did Ascension Public Schools adopt these guidelines?
- Are other events and venues limiting bags as well?
- How does the policy improve public safety?
- What about bringing blankets in cold weather?
- How many bags can each person bring into the venue?
- Can fans carry cameras, binoculars, smartphones, or tablets separately from what they put in a clear bag?
- What happens if I show up at the gate with a bag that is not permitted?
Are all purses prohibited?
No. Small clutch purses, with or without a handle or strap, are permitted along with either the 12″ x 6″ x 12″ (width; depth; height) clear tote bag or the one-gallon freezer bag. This should enable you to carry the same items you have in previous years and not slow entry into the venue for all fans. We encourage fans not to bring any bags but have created a policy that balances fan needs with improved public safety and convenience.
Do I have to put everything I’m carrying into the permissible bags?
No. We are limiting only the type of bags carried into the venue, not items that you normally bring to a game. Therefore, you can carry in your jacket or pockets keys, makeup, feminine products, comb, phone, wallet, credit cards, etc., if you choose not to put them in a clear bag or clutch. You can carry a blanket over your arms and binoculars and/or camera around your neck or in your hands without the case. You can use the clear bag and clutch to carry other items. You will continue to have the flexibility to bring a wide variety of approved items into the venue. Every member of your family may carry it in a permissible bag.

How many bags can each person bring into the venue?
One large clear bag – either a one-gallon Ziploc style bag or the 12″ x 6″ x 12″ (width; depth; height) clear bag – plus a small clutch. The larger clear bag must be a standard 12″ x 6″ x 12″ (width; depth; height) made of clear PVC vinyl and is easily searched. The one-gallon Ziploc bag is readily available, inexpensive, and easily searched. The small clutch allows privacy for small personal items and also is easily searched.
